Also known as "Cephalalgia" which Greek origins (Kephale - Head / Algos - Pain). headaches are, according to dictionary.com, "...pain in the head, caused by dilation of cerebral arteries, muscle contraction, insufficient oxygen in the cerebral blood, reaction to drugs, etc"... That said, it's hard to give a general diagnosis for what causes your particular type of headache since, of course, there are various types of headaches with individual causes. (Explained Below)
Headaches, I know them all too well. Before I was diagnosed with glaucoma, I would get chronic headaches each and every day. Some of them tolerable, some of them migraines. Oh my gosh, the pain was so bad.
True, if your headaches are chronic in nature, it'd be best to talk to your physician, you never know if it could be a mere side-effect of something a lot more severe... in my case, the sight stealing irreversible ailment that is, glaucoma. To put it simply, headaches seem to be a painful feeling occurring almost entirely in your head. For many people, headaches feel like a thumping pain. Yet, this isn't really the important part... you know, as well as I, what headaches are and what they feel like, so, let's get to the important questions.
What Kinds of Headaches Are There? So, how many types of headaches are there, you ask? I've learned there are several, each with their own unique type of recurring pain. By analyzing where the pain from your headache arises from may help you gain a better understand as to what you may need to do to stop them.
With these types of headaches, the pain is mainly aimed from the top of the skull, running down, to your neck. If you happen to notice pain reflective of this description, it'd be best to learn to take things a bit easier. ;D Simply put, the pain seems to cross your forehead from left temple to right temple. According to Wikipedia, anxiety is "...components which combine to create an unpleasant feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, apprehension, fear or worry." The pain is similar to anxiety but covering a larger vertical range. Pain can also be felt near the temples of each eye. This particular classification of headaches can have either a simple or complex explanation.
Pain reaching from the neck to the forehead. It feels like constant contractions of the muscles. Pain with this type of headache is generally moderate. These types of headaches are BEST dealt with by massages, explained below. Feeling like a deep, chronic pain focused around the eyes, forehead and nose... these types of headaches are typically caused by the inflammation of the lining of one of the sinus cavities. An excellent remedy to this type of headache can be found by inhaling steam vapor which serves to promote the flow of mucus, subsequently easing congestion and pressure. You probably didn't expect this one, eh? To put it simply, certain bright colors have been proven to cause negative effects ranging from eye fatigue to headaches. In summation more light is reflected from bright colors causing the eye to work harder causing eye fatigue, so, colors such as bright yellow and red should be avoided if fatigue tugs at you. Stop staring at the sun, in other words. Fun facts, babies cry more easily in bright yellow rooms. It's also been recorded that couples fight more often in bright yellow kitchens. The worst type of head pain. Migraines have no real definitive cause. The pain accompanying migraines seems to stay, completely, on one side of the head. Further effects of migraines can range from vision alterations, nauseousness and vomiting.
Tips to Relieve The Pain and Rate of Re-occurrences for Headaches Headaches are a common condition among us. We all experience from them from time to time and so, many times, a simple aspirin, or equivalent, will do the job, yet... when it comes down to chronic headaches and migraines, I suggest you not rely solely on pain relievers. Not only are they expensive, but, all you're doing is putting yourself into a cycle. If you know the type of chronic headache you suffer from, take steps to analyze ways to counter that particular headache. Talking to a specialist will probably yield the best results.
Learning to control stressful situations involving your mental and psychological being can drastically reduce a main contributor to headaches, anxiety, ultimately, decreasing the degree (pain and frequency) of headaches. Combine that with a healthier lifestyle (below) will yield fantastic results. Diet Oh yes. Whenever we talk about making your life better, the term, "Change your diet." always pops up. And it's true. What you put into your body has significant impacts on you... both mentally and physically. So, put away your groan. Headaches can be caused by deficiencies in the essential vitamins and minerals our bodies rely on. So it's important to lay off the fried food and go for some organic cuisine here and there... your body and head will thank you.
However, part of eating right doesn't just end with making sure you eat the right KINDS of foods, but, it also matters that you eat on a routine schedule.
Breakfast ~~> Brunch ~~> Lunch ~~> Dinner
Constantly keep yourself fueled and energized. It's one thing to eat healthy, it's an entirely different thing to eat healthy only twice a day. Also, ditch the constant sodas and try to go for 1 gallon of water a day. You'll be going to the bathroom a lot, but drinking at least this much eeryday is shown to keep your body detoxified and running smoothly. Also of note, having low blood-sugar levels can also contribute to headaches. Sleep Working overnight as I do, this is almost impossible to keep, but, if you have a job with set hours... it'd be best to maintain a normal sleeping pattern. The body needs sleep so it may recuperate from the day's stresses and activities. Not giving yourself the suggested 8 hours of sleep a night will start to show. (headaches, for instance) In order to help you keep a solid sleep schedule, avoid:
-Sugary snacks before bed (this includes coffee) -Alcohol -Cigarettes Exercise I know, right? All of these tips will totally compromise our sedentary lifestyles. Yet, it must be done, if you want to live happily-er. Exercising not only has its physical benefits, but, it is also a great way at relieving stress. Relieving the stresses of everyday life will drastically lower the rate of occurrence and severity of headaches. When it comes to exercise though, my particular fancy lies with martial arts, as I have personal experience with it. :D Yoga Sometimes, your body just needs a chance to relax and stretch. Yoga is one of the best ways to release pent up tension. It utilizes your spiritual energy to bring about an internal peace, subsequently melting away tension, stress and bodily aches. Truly an excellent means to combating not only headaches, but any other ailment.
"lol yoga is for womenz though. xD" This type of thinking will prevent you from truly living life. I've done both Martial Arts and Yoga and can vouch for their effectiveness. Also, as Tony Horton says, "Expand the mind a little and it'll feel like a ride you've never had before." Here, I'll even include a beginner class showing you some of the very basics of yoga. :)
When we talk about headaches, yoga is, essentially, a full body massage, the only difference being that Yoga is mainly used to prevent headaches whilst massages, done with the fingers/hands, are about relieving the pain already present.
So, you have a headache, lie down and dim the lights since bright lights can, in fact, worsen an existing headache. Now then, the very basic, yet still effective, massage is to take your index/middle fingers together and placing the pads of those fingers upon your temples. Apply a wee bit of pressure and move in circles. On a personal level, this works very well, but continuous circles need to be maintained. Massaging your ears and earlobes also seems to soothe the pain.
